Joshua and his wife, Polly, and eight children made the trip to Illinois from Anderson Co., TN and settled a short distance south east of Middle Creek Church in Hamilton Co., IL. abt 1836. On the way, after passing through a narrow section of Kentucky, the family stopped on the bank of the Ohio River and were ferried across that stream to Shawneetown.
Joshua lived only five years after moving into his new log home in Hamilton County. He was not a good farmer. He liked hunting and the woods much better than farming and had special affection for his long rifle, a muzzle loader. He carried his bullets in a pouch at his belt. Therein lies the story and the legend. Joshua was never known to buy lead or lead bullets; yet he had recourse to an apparently endless supply. According to the story handed down, he would go out across the fields, into the woods, and presently come back with a chunk of crude lead. His family never learned his secret, no matter how hard they tried. He would tell them that just before he died he would reveal it, but he never did. Three generations of his descendants have discussed this mysterious "lead mine", and some of the men, including my own father, have scoured the country in vain search for it. ; Of course, there was never any natural lead deposits in Hamilton County, but his old Joshua know that?
