THE BODY EXHUMED
1897
Joseph B. Ballard, a well known but somewhat accentric old farmer of Jackson township, died at his home southeast of Advance rather suddenly on the night of January 28th. He had been taking treatment of Dr. Kings of New Ross for several days for grip. (not legible) He retired at 8 o'clock having spent the evening romping with his little granddaughter. At 10 o'clock he ws found cold in death. Those present in the Ballard home the night of his death were Mrs. Ballard, George Stamper and wife and Sylvester Kirkham. The remains were interred in the little burying ground on the farm.
The deceased left a will bequeathing to Mrs. Ballard, who was his third wife, and many years his junior, his household effects provisions, family buggy, gray mare and harness, $400.00 in cash and a life interest in 40 acres of his land, besides one third of all personal property. Samuel M. Ralston, as executor of the will, delivered to the widow her share of the estate and she removed to the farm which she placed in charge of Sylvester Kirkham who had been in the employ of Mr. Ballard, and continues to make his home with Mrs Ballard.
Shortly after the funeral of Mr. Ballard, his son Lewis H. and son in law Jas O Graven made some discoveries which led the the suspicion that Mr Ballards's death was not from a natural causes, but that he died from strychoine poisoning. After carefully considering the matter, they determined upon an investigation which was onducted on Monday afternoon under the direction of Coroner Armstrong, Undertaker George Comley, of Heuser & Hogshire's establishment, exhumed the remains, which were found to be in an advanced state of decompsition. A post-mortem was conducted by Dr's W. F. Batman, J. R. Ball and J. S. Hardy of this city, Dr. King of New Ross, Dr.'s Hamilton, Burk and Hall of Advance, and Coroner Armstrong. Prof Gels of Indianapolis was prsent and took the stomach, heart, a parto fo the liver and one kidney, which will be analyzed. Should the analysis reveal traces of poison, the investigation will be continued. The affair caused somewhat of a sensation in the neighborhood, and the result of the analysis is looked forward to with much interest.
Dr. Gels, who is making the analysis, is one of the most prominent chemists in the west. Hew as the chemist in Binshaw murder case and the Kellar case of Terre Haute.
Pioneer Paper June 24 1897
Coroner Armstrong has not filed his report in the Joseph B. Ballard inquest but the The Pioneer has it from reliable authority that Prof. Frank Geiss, the chemist has completed his analysis on the stomach of Mr. Ballard, and failed to find the slightest trace of poison
