"RG #1D2B7 Joseph Ringo was the seventh son of Henry Ringo and Margaret Major.
; He was born "ye 12th of March 1763 the Seventh day of the week at
; 3 o'Clock in the afternoon," according to his father's Bible.
"His parents had moved from Hopewell Township about 1761 to Amwell township, Hunterdon County, New Jersey, where they had acquired a 220 acre farm on the Trenton Road. On March 8, 1763 Henry attended the annual election of officers at Ringo's old Tavern, a few miles north of his new residence, where he was elected to be Amwell Township Overseer of 'Rock Road,' that section of the Trenton Road between Rocktown and the Hopewell Township line. Four days later his son, Joseph, was born in the stone house on his new farm.
"Recent research indicates that the Henry Ringo family left New Jersey in 1768 and a year later Henry was the Overseer for the Mountain Road near Piney Creek of Bull Run in Loudoun County, Virginia. By 1772 he had moved again, this time to a farm of 130 acres in Prince William County, Virginia, located on Young's Road. Joseph had his 9th birthday there a few months after his father bought it.
"Joseph Ringo grew up there, helping out with the work around the farm. He was still there in 1782 some ten years later, when the Prince William Tax list record begins. He continues to show in those lists with his father, motheer and most of his brothers until June 10, 1789 when he appeared for the last time.
"By November 7, 1789 Joseph Ringo was in Mason County, Kentucky witnessing a deed with his brothers, Peter and Major. Reconstructing the lives of Henry Ringo and his children makes it exceedingly clear that the summer of 1789 was the time of the great move from Virginia to Kentucky for them. The cavalcade, at least, Henry Ringo, then 64, Margaret, his wife, 57; sons, Peter 37, Major nearly 34, Samuel 28, and Joseph 26. In addition all evidence indicates that they took with them the orphaned children of Philip Ringo, Jemina 15, Cornelius 14, John 12, Sarah 10, William 8, Henry 6, and Reuben Ringo not yet 5 years of age, under the watch of Frances, 23.
"Joseph Ringo obviously stayed with his father and his brothers on their land, which was first in Fayette, later Clark and finally Montgomery County, Kentucky. It was in that county on December 6, 1798 that Joseph was married to Mary "Polly" Ratliff, who was born June 2, 1781 in Prince William County, Virginia. He was 35 years of age and his bride, who was the daughter of Zephaniah Ratliff and Philadelphia Stone, was 17 years old.
"They were to have at least twelve children, who survived childhood, seven boys and five girls, before she passed away in 1825.
"In 1801 Joseph Ringo was deeded a tract of land on Hingston Creek by his brother, Peter, and according to 'Ky. Commissioned Officers, 1792-1811' Joseph Ringo was on October 29, 1802 named Quartermaster of the 34th Regiment of the Kentucky Militia, which was always on call against Indian attack. When his father, Henry, died the following year, Joseph was one of the heirs.
"In the 1810 census of Montgomery County Joseph Ringo and his wife, Mary, are shown with four male children and three females, all under 10 years of age, living on a 100 acre farm. Before the next cnesus taker came around in 1820 he had a total of 215 acres on Hingston Creek, and in addition his brother, Peter, had asked his brother Major and him to take over his land and affairs. Joseph had also paid $700 to Spencer Mosely for a negro slave, whose name was 'Presly, aged about 20 years.'
