(3) Granddaughter Virginia Tayloe Lewis later wrote, "The bells rang for a long time afte r my Grandfather Tayloe's death, and every one said that the house was haunted; the wires wer e cut and still they rang... Our dining-room servant would come upstairs in the evening to as k if anyone rang the bell, and no one had." There are many other stories that the house is ha unted, some as late as 1969.

Lewis wrote Benjamin Ogle Tayloe at Lenox, MA, from Washington, "You r mother has been a little indisposed for a week past; but is now down stairs as usual, readi ng the paper before breakfast. The death of Mrs. Madison seemed to affect her very much, an d I am sure was the cause of her low spirits."
(4) Was admired for "sincerity and kindness of heart, graceful and dignified manners, and t rue and unaffected piety."
(3) Virginia Tayloe Lewis wrote, "Soon after my dear old grandmother, Mrs. Tayloe, died, i n her 83rd year, we left "The Octagon." It belonged to the two eldest sons, and all the silve r, according to English law, went also to the sons."
