In the 1870 census, George is listed as the child of Lyman and Adeline Ellis, he was 13 at the time and lived with his 7 brothers and sisters on the farm that his Lyman owned in Bloom Township. The value of the farm at that time was listed as $35,500 and the family had assets worth $2,000.
On December 30, 1877, George married Emma Ann Baldwin in Thornton, Illinois. They were married by a Justice of the Peace.
In the 1880 census, George (23) and Emma (22) lived with their 2 year old son George (who was really 16 months) on a farm in Bloom Township. His occupation was listed as farmer and her occupation was listed as keeping house.
By the 1900 census, George and Emma Ann were still farming, but now in Thronton Township. George was now 43 and Emma was 42 and they had been married for 23 years. ; George indicates that he was born in Illinois, but his parents were both from New York. Emma was born in Illinois, but lists her parents as having come from England. They had had 5 more children since the last census and all 6 had survived. Children living at home were George N. 21 (Sept. 1878) listed as a day laborer, Roy (Leroy?) 19, (Jan. 1881) listed as a farm laborer (for his dad?), Lillian Estelle 17 (Jan. 1883), Joel Lyman 15 (Dec. 1884), WIlliam "Willie" Alfred 12 (Dec. 1887) and Lydia M. 8 (Aug. 1891) the latter three listed as in school. They could all read and write. George owned the farm, but had a mortgage on it and they lived in a house on the farm.
By the 1910 census, George and Emma were living in a house in Harvey, at15223 Turlington Ave. George was now 53 and Emma was 52 and they had been married for 31 years. They had had 3 more children since the last Census all of whom had died. George's occupation was now painter and his place of business is listed as contractor, which means that he probably worked out of his house as he was also listed as an employer. Five of their children were still living at home. Leroy had gotten married and rented the house next door. The children that were still living at home were George N. 32 listed as a house painter, ostensibly for his father, Lillian Estelle 27 listed as a dressmaker working out of the home, William 22 listed as a laborer in a factory, Lydia 18 no occupation, and Joseph 24 listed as laborer on a farm. This latter person is probably Joel as this about right for his age or they missed this child in the last census. George must have done alright when he sold the farm as he now owned his own home free and clear.
Leroy and his wife Carrie Genevieve Bell lived next door to George and Emma in a house that they rented at 15227 with their three kids. They had been married 5 years ealier. Carrie was from Michigan as was her father and her mother was from Ohio. They had had 3 children and all three survived. Leroy's occupation was a Craneman and he worked on a Steam Shovel. Carrie had no occupation listed. Their children were: Virgil J. (5), Cecil L. C. (3) and Audrey M. (1 10/12).
By the 1920 Census things had changed dramatically. Emma had died in 1919. George was now 63 and was living with his daughter Lydia 28 who was single. George was still a painting contractor and Lydia had no occupation. They were living at 15311 Lexington Ave apparently with another family or in a house that had two apartments. Maybe they were renting some of the extra space out.
