The principality was established at the death of https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Frederick_V,_Burgrave_of_Nuremberg">Frederick V, Burgrave of Nuremberg, on 21 January 1398, when his lands were partitioned between his two sons. The younger son, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Frederick_I,_Elector_of_Brandenburg">Frederick VI, received Ansbach and the elder, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_III,_Burgrave_of_Nuremberg">John III, received https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Principality_of_Bayreuth">Bayreuth. After John III's death on 11 June 1420, the two principalities were reunited under Frederick VI, who had become https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Prince-elector">Elector Frederick I of https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brandenburg">Brandenburg in 1415.

On 2 December 1791, the reigning Prince and Margrave of Ansbach, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Charles_Alexander,_Margrave_of_Brandenburg-Ansbach">Charles Alexander, who had also succeeded to Bayreuth, sold the sovereignty of his principalities to King https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Frederick_William_II_of_Prussia">Frederick William II of https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kingdom_of_Prussia">Prussia. The Margrave was middle-aged and childless, and Frederick William was his kinsman as the head of the House of Hohenzollern. The Margrave moved to England with his English second wife.
