Obituary for Otto J. Swalve
In lieu of flowers the family prefers that memorial donations be made to them so that they may purchase a special gift for the use of the Rosewood Manor residents, in memory of Otto. Otto Joe Swalve Jr., the son of Otto Joe and Elsie (Sleeper) Swalve Sr., was born June 1, 1924, in Ledyard, Iowa. He passed away Saturday, February 26, 2011, at Avera Holy Family Health in Estherville at the age of 86. He received his education at the Grant Center of Bancroft and Wallingford schools. At 15 years of age, Otto went to work for area farmers, milking cows and doing other various farm chores. At the age of 17, he enlisted in the United States Army and fought in World War II from 1943 to 1945, participating in the battles of the northern Solomons, Luzon, and the Philippine Islands. He was awarded the Philippine Liberation Ribbon with two stars and the Good Conduct Medal. After his honorable discharge from the military, due to being ill with Malaria, he returned to Estherville to work various jobs around the area, including working for the Vandy Grocery store as a meat cutter. On October 27, 1946, Otto was united in marriage to Norma Archer at the Lutheran Church in Spirit Lake, Iowa. The couple made their home in Estherville, where Otto worked as a bartender for The Friendly Tavern. He later worked for Coast to Coast as a sales clerk and a TV tech, for D.E.K. as a line man, and for Toban's (which later became Morrell's) in the horse, beef, and pork plants. In the early 60's, the family moved to Northwood, Iowa, where they farmed and raised dairy cattle for 5 years. They then returned to Estherville, where Otto worked for Emmet County as a road grader operator and later for Esthermaid Creamery. His last ten years leading up until retirement, Otto worked at John Morrell as a meat cutter, until the plant closed. After retirement, Otto worked at Art's-Way Manufacturing in Armstrong in the parts and scale rooms, and also delivered parts all over the US for them. In the later years, he worked with Norma taking care of elderly or disabled people until Norma's health failed. Otto was a very dedicated gardener with a garden large enough to feed all his family and friends, and even residents of the Rosewood Manor nursing home, where Norma resides. He also enjoyed fishing, hunting, camping, boating, and being in the great outdoors. His multiple daily visits to Rosewood Manor to visit Norma were highlights of all his days. Most of all, Otto loved and was very proud of his family, especially his great-grandchildren. He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church and the VFW Post 3388 both in Estherville. Left to cherish Otto's memory are his wife Norma, of 65 years; his son: Lowell and his wife Diane of Estherville; 4 grandchildren: Marcy Sander and her husband Kevin of Estherville, Ryan Swalve and his wife Kristin of Winterset, IA, Tommy Fry and his wife Leana of Des Moines, IA, Colleen Opitz and her husband Mike of Gaithersburg, MD; 8 great-grandchildren: Izaak and Abby Sander of Estherville, Nicholas and Anna Swalve of Winterset, Tyler, Aaron, and Jordan Fry of DesMoines, IA, and Miranda Opitz of Gaithersburg, MD; 1 brother: Andrew Swalve and his wife Rozella of Estherville; 6 sisters: Sena McGregor and her husband Forrest of Buffalo Center, IA, Leona Kleine of Elk River, MN, Annie Schroeder, Anita Barlow and her husband Vern, Elsie Selberg and her husband Harold, and Ada Williams all of Estherville; 2 Sister-in-laws: Betty Swalve of Oyens, IA, and Fern Archer of Evanston, IL, ; 2 Brother-in-laws: Ernest Solmonson and Milton "Doc" Archer and his wife Sharon both of Estherville; and many nieces and nephews. Otto was preceeded in death by his daughter, Phyllis; his parents; 5 brothers and spouses: Richard and Ethel Swalve, Roy and Mata Swalve, Evert and Jennie Swalve, Johnny and Nettie Isebrand, and Ellsworth "Doc" Swalve; 2 sisters and spouses: Francis and Fred Beitz and Tillie and Vinal Bebo; 5 brother-in-laws and spouses: Harry Schroeder, Dick Williams, Chuck Kleine, Floyd and Mae Archer, and Fay and Adeline Archer; 4 sister-in-laws and spouses: Verga and John Heidecker, Lila and George Hartnett, Zella Solmonson, and Evelyn and Wayne Solmonson.
