About 2 of the brothers of Maj. Harrison M. Spain , both who served in the Civil War:
Dr. Wesley Spain: Dr.in Olney - prisoner of war during Civil War. In battle of Shilow and possibly fought in Andersonville.
Dr. Archie Spain: A doctor in Indianapolis.
Information from 1860 Gibson Co. census where he is in parents household and listed as school teacher. In 1870 census he is in household of brother Harrison and is listed as a druggist. He is listed as Dr. J.W. Spain in 1918 when he is relating some family history. He is 86 years old then and rather feeble, so a daughter, Mrs. E. H. James, writes for him. So far, have not found record of his marriage or children. Exact vitals from Dennis Ostgard. Also he is source of wife and child info. He was in Co. C, 58th Indiana Infantry and was discharged for disability, Sept. 20, 1862. Further information (other children and cemetery and 1910 census) from Richland Co., IL information e-mailed by Michele Reynolds. In 1880 census he is in Luka,Marion,IL, listed as a physician, with wife Mary listed as a dress maker, and his two daughters and a domestic servant.
