l; Marriage (2): Zachariah (Zack) HITCH on 29 Nov 1849 2

in Phillips was a widow with two children when she married Zachariah Hitch. Her husband died August 1847 age about 47. He had been married before and had a large family by his first wife. The names of his children by his second marriage were Cordelia Phillips, b - Dec. 26,1844 - she never married - and Mary Phillips, b. Nov. 3,1846 and in 1931 was living at Petersburg, IN. She married Jan. 1,1867 William Alexander Oliphant and by this union there were May, Ray, and Adda. Adda married a Mr. George and it was she who sent the description of the Hitch home and hospitality which follows.??Excerpt from letter by Mrs. Adda Oliphant George, Petersburg, IN. dated Nov. 5, 1930:??"The home of Zachariah and Adeline Spain (Phillips) Hitch was unpretentious, located in the center of his farm and reached only by going through pastures and the opening of a succession of gates yet no house welcomed more guests. The seclusion and the gates only lent a charm - no, the charm was within the gates. Anyway it drew all the aunts, uncles, cousins, and friends alike.??One expression my grandmother's memory is linked with is, "If there is room in the heart there is room in the home." Besides their own children, they reared four others, one of them being a cousin, Elizabeth Spain, who when grown married one of their sons - Harrison. This Mary Adeline Spain is a descendant of Ethan Allen. A genealogist who several years ago wrote a history of the Allen family said, not, but my grandmother and her brothers remember their grandmother talked often of her Uncle Ethan and that was during the time of his military activities and where ever one of them lives they are assured of this." (The grandmother's sisters also remembered the incident mentioned above.)??"A few weeks ago a cousin told me of all her relatives, some very wealthy and she herself a city girl then, she would rather go to this Hitch home than anywhere else. She would cut all the other visits short so she might be there longer - that Aunt Adeline's rag carpets looked brighter, the stripes never faded, the hearth was always kept fresh painted red, andirons black and the back logs so big - and Aunt Adeline had the reputation far and wide as a wonderful cook and in all had a personality one never forgot. She was helpless for sixteen years (rheumatism), but uncomplaining. She seemed to live on a higher plane. Ministers came a long distance to talk with her and went away with a benediction on them. She was truly a great woman and I'm proud to have been a part of her dear name."??In the Federal Census of 1900, Mary A. Hitch is listed in Gibson County, Indiana in a household as follows: - Mary A. Hitch, born 11/1824 in IN - Cordelia Phillips, born 12/1844 in IN.
