To all interested in Archibald Spain:

I have an old newspaper obituary that reads: "DIED: At his residence in Patuka (sp?), Ind. on the 31 inst. of Dropsy, Mr. Archibald Spain, Sr. in the 72d year of his age. The deceased was born in Dinwidie Co., Virginia, in the year 1798, and 1813 being 15 years pf age, moved with his father to Rutherford County, North Carolina where he lived until 1815 at which time he moved to the Indiana Territory..." The rest of the article is gone.

Archibald was the father of my gggrandfather, Harrison M. Spain, who was the father of my grandfather Harrison M. Spain who move to Memphis, TN from Olney, IL around 1910...I think. He died 1978 and is buried in Memphis. He had 2, maybe 3 sisters, Minnie and Nell and I think one more. One sister married a man with sur name "Shy". My grandfather married Hazel Waddington and had 4 sons, Harrison Milburn, William Waddington, DeWitt Shy (my Dad), and John Nicholas, the only brother still living.

Archibald's son, the first Harrison Milburn Spain (I think the first) was a Major in the Union army. I have two official Civil War documents and one small scrap of newspaper that says, "We were pleased to see the smiling countenance of Capt. Harrison Spain, of the 80th Ind. Vols,. in our sanctum yesterday. The captain is a good looking and clever gentleman, and we doubt not is an efficient officer. He is home on a short furlough." Sounds almost like an ad in the personals. The documents are his "mustering out" paperwork.

Betty, My info says Archibald Spain (of Virginia) married Sarah Garwood (of Kentucky) in1819.No month and day were given. It implies they married "near Vincennes" in the Indiana Territory. I have some hand written notes, from the early 70's, in my writing, that I probably took while talking with my Grandfather, but I can't figure out what I meant. But these notes mention a John Spain possibly married to Jane Aatubbe (Chactaw). I believe it says that they were the parents of Major Johnson Spain from Cosesco (Sp?), Miss. I also have a list of names, possibly siblings, that reads "John Hughes S - Va., Memphis - Mable Spain - 1912-, Jim Clyde - oldest, Mary Dodd, Mitchell Johnson, Raymond LaMar." What my note does not say is how my Grandfather (Harrison M. Spain) was related. Does any of this sound familiar? Randy

LITTLEBERRY SPAIN I

His son, Littleberry Spain b. 1755 died: 1833 Surrey Co NC

married: c1780 Sally Matthews died: July 10, 1846

Littleberry Spain and Sally Matthews had the following children:

1775 Littleberry Spain see below

1781 Nancy Spain

1796 Bradley Spain m. 1816 Martha Day

1796 Susan Rose Spain twin to Bradley

???? Betsy Matthews Spain

Claiborne Spain b. 1760, a son of Thomas Spain Jr. and Elizabeth Mayo, had

married Frances Threeweeks in Sussex Co VA and was found in Gilford Co NC

which was formed from Surrey Co. Claiborne, who would have been a cousin

to Littleberry Spain and was born five years his junior, may have migrated

to Surrey Co NC with Littleberry.

The Matthews Family had begun to settle Surrey Co NC as early as 1758 when

James Matthews Sr. obtained a grant on the Great Alamance River. His son,

James Matthews Jr. b. 1739, married Mary Doak there in 1766 and purchased

500 acres of land from his father the same year. Many of the Matthews

family members were Quakers who had arrived in Boston in the early 1700s,

had lived in New Jersey and Maryland before migrating to NC. Carl W.

Matthews, who married Elaine Kinney, is a direct descendent of James

Matthews Jr. and Mary Doak.

William Spain b. 1809 married 1835 Ann Potts in Surrey Co NC. Absolem

Matthews served as bondsman for the marriage. William was said to have

been a son of Berry and Betsy Spain.

Nevel Spain b. 1793 married Sarah Lathem Scott Benderman whose Mother was

Mary Doak Matthews, a grand daughter of James and Mary Doak Matthews.

Nevel died in 1856 and was buried in Matthews Cemetery, Maury Co. Tenn.

LITTLEBURY SPAIN II

Their son, Littleberry Spain II b. c1775

married: Mrs. Sarah Matthews prior to 1814

Sarah Matthews had been previously married and had a daughter

whose name was Susannah. Susannah Matthews married Mark

Taylor 1814 in Surrey Co NC. Littleberry Spain was bondsman for the

marriage, something usually performed by a father.

The possibility exists that William Spain was actually William Matthews, son

of William and Sarah (Elizabeth..Betsy??) Matthews who became a stepson of

Littleberry (Berry??) Spain.

Conjecture: Both Littleberry Spain b. 1775 and Sarah Matthews had been

previously married. William Matthews died near 1809. Sarah had borne a

son, William, shortly before her marriage to Littleberry Spain who had

children of his own. William knew no other father than Littleberry Spain,

but when he married, his Uncle Absolem, served as bondsman.

Littleberry Spain III was born 1793.

His mother may have been a first wife of Littlberry Spain II

William Spain b. c1809 was, probably, a child of Littleberry & Sarah

He was said to have been child of Berry & Betsy Spain

Could the names have been Littleberry & Sarah Elizabeth?

William Spain married 1835 Ann Potts in Surrey Co NC

Absolem Matthews served as bondsman.

Absolem Spain b. 1829 married Hall Co GA 1849

Abraham Spain was, most likely, a child in this family.

Abraham Spain b. 1817 NC married Letty Tapp, Hall Co GA 1836

The 1850 Hall Co GA Census stated they had

four daughters born 1837 thru 1849

LITTLEBERRY SPAIN III

His son, Littleberry Spain III b. 1793

married: Sarah

1870 Census Hall Co GA listed

Littleberry Spain b. 1792 NC

Sarah Spain b. 1799

Littleberry Spain was Agent for Thomas Spain on the

1848 Hall Co Tax Digest. Could he have had a son by

that name. The Thomas Spain

serving in the Hall Co GA Volunteers in 1836 and was shown in the 1840 Hall

Co GA Census. Elijah Smallwood lived in the Cassidy District of Hall Co

GA 1830.

Elisha Smallwood, James Matthews, and Capt. William Hall

inventoried the estate of John Griffith in Surrey Co NC 1779. Capt.

Willliam Hall had married Elizabeth Thankful Doak, a first cousin of

Mary Doak who married James Matthews.

Their son, Littlebury Spain IV b. c1840

married 1860 Martha Smallwood Hall Co GA

children of Littlebury Spain and Martha Smallwood were:

1861 William Benton Spain

1865 Thomas Spain

The 1870 Hall Co GA Census indicated that Martha Spain was Head of

Household and had two sons, W B and Thomas. The Census showed her to

have been born in 1846 and was a Farm Worker. Littleberry Spain was not

listed.

The 1870 Hall Co GA Census indicated Elizabeth Spain b. 1822 North

Carolina was Head of Household with son, Thomas b 1850. Elizabeth was

listed as a Farm Laborer.

What had happened to Littleberry and Thomas Spain. They were both in

Hall Co GA in 1860 but are not there in 1870.

The older generations Spains all lived in the Namozine Dist. between

Namozine Creek and Whipponock Creek. This is in the NW portion of the

county close by Chesterfield, Nottoway, and Amelia counties. Jno. Spain,

the oldest in this line was identified in the testimony given by his

grandson Albert E. Spain as he reported the death of Hamlin E. Sr. in 1874.

I have found no other documentaion concerning the parents of Hamlin Sr. I

am aware of the Land grant made to William Spain in 1720 on Mawhipponock

Crk. and assume there is a connection. There remains a cemetery remnant of

this land holding.
