    Meerdere gezinnen hebben onderduikers. ‘Heel de Berkenrode zat vol onderduikers’ hoor ik. Veel jongens die niet in Duitse dienst willen of jongens die niet in Duitsland tewerkgesteld willen worden, verstoppen zich in het veld. In 1943 wordt de lichting van 1924 opgeroepen om te werken in Hamburg. Op het eind van de oorlog roepen de Duitsers alle Nederlandse mannen en jongens boven de 16 jaar op.Ze moeten op ‘Arbeidseinsatz’. Alle Duitse mannen dienen in het leger en de Nederlanders moeten aan het werk in de oorlogsindustrie.  Er zijn razzia’s. Soms is een turfbult uitgehold en bivakkeren ze daar. Ook ‘Bakkers’ Hinnek Schulte (zoon van Bakkers Berend en broer van Bakkers Jan), Wietze Peter en Hannes Hartmann zijn ondergedoken. Zij hebben een plek gevonden in de barak van Harm Hartmann in de Berkenrode. Ze zijn Hamburg ontvlucht op het moment dat de stad gebombardeerd wordt. Per trein zijn de jongens aangekomen in Meppen en van hieruit te voet naar Barger-Compascuum gegaan.
