Ten tijde van de oorlog woont het echtpaar Jan ‘Geert’ Suelmann en Maria Aleida Nieters op Berkenrode 25. Dit is in die tijd het eerste huis ten zuiden van de Postweg aan de Westra’s wieke en de ouderlijke woning van Leida Nieters. Geert Suelmann is beter bekend onder zijn bijnaam ‘Rooie Geert’ genoemd naar zijn roodkleurige haardos. De woning staat op het bovenveen. Bij het huis is een turfbult opgestapeld zodanig dat het hol is en er mensen in kunnen schuilen. Drie onderduikers zitten hier. Het zijn Hendrik Bürmann, neef van de familie Suelmann en het joodse echtpaar Bennie en Resie Samson. Hendrik en zijn broer Frans Bürmann zijn officieel Duitsers. Zij moeten zich melden bij de Wehrmacht om voor de Duitser als soldaat te dienen. Na hun opleiding weten beide jongens te ontkomen en duiken onder. Franz Bürmann heeft geen vaste verblijfplaats. Hij is veel bij familie in Barger-Oosterveld of bevindt zich ergens in het veld. Hendrik daarentegen is ondergedoken bij de familie Suelmann, zoals hiervoor beschreven. Bennie Samson is rabbie en moet zich aan de Joodse tradities houden.Zo moet hij en zijn vrouw elke dag op gezette tijden in gebed. Vader Geert Suelmann wijst hen waar het oosten is. Het eten is op de bon, maar de drie onderduikers hoeven niet te verhongeren. De familie Suelmann slacht clandistien, heeft een grote tuin, kippen voor eieren, koeien voor melk en buurman bakker Kliphuis brengt het brood. Zoon Henk Kliphuis dacht weleens ‘wat moeten zij veel brood’ maar hij zei maar niets immers hij verdiende eraan. Dit vertelt hij mij later.  Moeder Suelmann fungeert als boodschapper tussen Bennie en Resie Samson (15) en hun joodse familie, ergens op zand-Drenthe. Zij fietst veel heen en weer. Na de oorlog krijgt ze een onderscheiding van de Anjerstichting. Bürmann en het echtpaar Samson zijn oplettend en brengen de familie Suelmann niet in gevaar. Twee en een half jaar houden ze zich verstopt in de bult.



Geert Suelmann komt  thuis. Hij heeft klompen bij Bernard Wilken gekocht en op de terugweg naar huis ziet hij in de verte de overvalauto staan. Op dat moment vreest hij dat de landwachten bij ‘zijn’ huis huiszoeking doen.  De landwachten zijn niet de weg naar zijn huis, linksaf ingeslagen, maar de andere kant op. Rechtsaf de Berkenrode in.
