After the war there were tens of thousands of (especially Jewish) Dutchmen who were not officially confirmed to have died. This entailed all kinds of legal complications, such as inheritance issues. In order to solve these problems, the "Law on Provisions for the Declaration of Death Decrees" came into force in June 1949. This law stipulated that the Minister of Justice could have a death certificate drawn up at the registry office. The ministry was responsible for registering and investigating the missing. That investigation was to minimize the chance that the missing would later turn up with all the complications that ensued. The results of that study were published in the Dutch Government Gazette.
