== Biography ==Joseph was the first Nickerson son to bear this name. This first Joseph Nickerson appparently died prior to his family leaving England for Boston (on April 15, 1637), per the following excerpt: April the 8th 1637. "The examinaction of William Nickerson of Nowch in Nöff weavear ageed 33 yeares and Anne his wife aged 28 yeares with 4 children Nicho Robartt Elizabeth and Anne ar desirous to goe to Bostone in New England ther to inhabitt." https://www.google.com/books/edition/Collections_of_the_Massachusetts_Histori/I7IyAQAAMAAJ?hl=en&gbpv=1&bsq=Nickerson This first Joseph is not listed among the 4 children and therefore presumably died young.

=== Naming Patterns === Many children died In the 17th and 18th centuries. Parents could usually count on one third of their children not surviving. When a child died, the name was often used again. If a baby died, the next child of the same sex would often be given the same name. Parents had no problem with re-using the name of a dead child for a subsequent birth. A family might, therefore, have several John or Jane children. The re-use of a name almost always meant that the first child with that name had died.
