Notes about Herbert KITCHEN

Dear sue,

My cousin Geoffrey Kitchen (now deceased) told me that the Kitchen family left their posts at Harry Baskervilles' farm at Whittington Hurst - the family had moved with the Baskervilles from Cheshire at the beginning of the century - to work on the Dyotts' family estate in the mid-1920s. Geoffrey was born at Freeford Hall in 1931, when his mother Daisy was working there as a cook and his father John (my mother Annie's eldest brother) was working on the farm. William Kitchen was at that time the Dyotts' horseman and stockman, whereas John developed his interest in cars by cleaning Dyotts' limousine and chauffeuring them about.

I presume that «b»Herbert«/b» assisted his father William with the horses. Herbert was born in 1913 and in the photos I would say he looks about 16. The young boy in Photo 2 would have been his brother Arthur, who was born in 1918.

Geoffrey told me that the Dyotts were missionaries and that they lived in China in that capacity for 6 months. I have a photograph of Mrs Dyott hugging a black baby, and also a group photograph which includes my mother and some of her siblings when they were youthful members of 'The Band of True Friends', a religious group organised by Mrs Dyott. If you would like me to find these photos and copy them to you, I would be happy to do so.

The Kitchen family stayed with the Dyottsuntil WW2. William and Bertha initially lived in Freeford Lodge, then moved to a bungalow just down from the Lodge and finally to Freeford Cottage. During the War William Kitchen still lived at Freeford Cottage, but by now he was stoking boilers at the Barracks.

I hope that helps you to position the Kitchen family in the Freeford Hall history.
