Notes about Clifford James WESTFALL

(Research):Cathys Valley,

My ancestors came to Mariposa County on both sides of the f amily in 1854. {They first came to California through Uta h where a son of Samuel Demoss and his wife Sarah Elizabet h Probasco DeMoss had a son in 1852 while staying in Salt L ake City with Bingham Young. They left there in 1852 and co ntinued to California staying in Eureka until spring of 185 4 when they came to Mariposa County.} The Probascos left from Illinois on a wagon train and cam e out arriving in Mariposa in 1854. My great-grandfather, J ohn W. {Workman} Probasco, had two sons, Henry and Jacob i n California. Jacob was my mother’s father. He raised his f amily on the old Probasco ranch in the Green Mountain area. In fact, when my grandfather left Illinois and came acros s by wagon train some place on the prairie, East of Califor nia, it was his duty one night to stand guard. The Indian s at that time, I don’t know which tribe was running in tha t part of the country. They would slip in at night and swip e the horses and supplies. So one night my grandfather wa s standing guard around the wagon train that had formed a c ircle. It was his duty to watch the stock as this night wa s the darkest nightever. He stood in a big wash and was lo oking up, when he saw little blips going over the rise. H e waited for a while and said he just let loose with his ol d double barrel shot gun, then the next morning they got u p when it was still dark and left camp. Later that day, a rider came through and wanted to know i f they had seen that big fight that they had last night. Th ey asked why, and he said, " Well there were 16 dead Indian s back there in the wash." Well, granddad would tell that s tory testifying to it’s truth only each time there were 14 , 17, or 16. The Chinese worked for 50 cents per man, per day, there i s a little difference between the wages those days and th e wages today. They camped under the big oak tree down by t he creek where our ranch was and built this rock wall fenc e which is still standing in places and being used. I remem ber the wall well. When I was younger, I used to run aroun d it hunting squirrels. Our ranch was just about 3 miles north of Green Mountain. I n fact, the road Darrah to Mariposa came right up the creek , pass the old place where I was raised. They tried at on e time to make it the main road, but my old Great Grandfath er put a stop to that. I remember our neighbors, Effie and Emmet Preston. They liv ed up the creek about a mile and we both had turkeys. {Effie Probasco was the daughter of Henry Probasco (son o f John Workman Probasco), Emmet Preston was the son of Nanc y Jane Chapman and Jefferson Preston. Effie and her husban d lived in the old Probasco home place in Oakvale. It get s more complicated here as Effie’s mother was the sister o f Jefferson Preston and Nancy was the daughter of Catherin e Probasco, the daughter of John Workman Probasco, and Jame s Chapman.}

    Begun in 1935 by the Social Security Act signed into law by FDR, more than thirty million Americans were registered for the economic security sanctions by 1937. From 1937 to 1940, payments were made in one-lump sums amounts with the first amount being seventeen cents. Following amendments in 1939, the payments turned into monthly benefits and increased. Following further amendments in 1950, cost-of-living increases were awarded to those who were receiving benefits. From 1950 to the present, benefits have increased yearly in response to inflation concerning the costs of living.
