Sir Edward Noel, 1st Earl of Gainsborough was baptised on 27 January 1640/41 at Boughton Malherbe, Kent, England. He was the son of Sir Baptist Noel, 3rd Viscount Campden and Hon. Hester Wotton. He married, firstly, Lady Elizabeth Wriothesley, daughter of Thomas Wriothesley, 4th Earl of Southampton and Rachel de Massue, in May 1661. He married, secondly, Mary Herbert on 23 April 1683. He died in January 1688/89.
Sir Edward Noel, 1st Earl of Gainsborough held the office of Member of Parliament (M.P.) for Rutland between 1661 and 1678.
He held the office of Lord-Lieutenant of Hampshire between 1678 and 1687.
He held the office of Member of Parliament (M.P.) for Hampshire between February 1679 and July 1679.
He was created 1st Baron Noel of Titchfield, co. Southampton [England] on 3 February 1680/81, with a special remainder to his brothers, Baptist and John Noel.
He held the office of Governor of Portsmouth between 1682 and 1687.
He held the office of Lord-Lieutenant of Rutland between 1682 and 1687.2
