Karel VI (Wenen, 1 oktober 1685 – aldaar, 20 oktober 1740) was keizer van het Heilige Roomse Rijk van 1711 tot 1740, en de tweede zoon van Leopold I met zijn derde vrouw Eleonore van Palts-Neuberg.

Hij was oorspronkelijk de erfgenaam van de Spaanse Habsburgers. Toen Karel II van Spanje Filips V tot zijn erfgenaam benoemde, begon een dispuut over de Spaanse troon dat leidde tot de Spaanse successieoorlog.

Nadat zijn oudere broer, keizer Jozef I, plots stierf werd hij gedwongen om terug te keren en de troon over te nemen. In 1711 werd hij gekroond in Frankfurt.

Karel VI is ook een van de keizers van het Heilige Roomse Rijk in een ononderbroken rij van vier, wier muzikale kwaliteiten zich ook uiten in het zelf componeren van muziekstukken.

Zijn kinderen waren Maria Theresia van Oostenrijk en Maria Anna van Oostenrijk. Hij had echter geen levende mannelijke erfgenamen. Hij stelde daarom de Pragmatieke Sanctie op, die verklaarde dat zijn rijk niet verdeeld kon worden, en die toeliet dat dochters ook de troon van hun vader konden erven.

In 1700 trad hij op als kandidaat voor de Spaanse troon, waarop de Spaanse Successie-oorlog ontbrandde. Koning van Spanje (als Karel VII, 1703-2 jul 1706). In 1711 volgde hij zijn broeder op als keizer (gekozen 12 okt, gekroond 22 okt) en in diens erflanden. Koning van Hongarije (22 mei 1712); koning van Bohemen (5 jun 1723). In 1714 verwierf hij oa. de Zuidelijke Nederlanden en breidde hij zijn macht op de Balkan uit. Hij bracht de mogendheden er toe om de Pragmatieke Sanctie te erkennen.
