Notes about Ernst Casimir Graaf van Nassau-Dietz

Graaf van Nassau, Katzenelnbogen en Dietz.
Hij diende na 1590 in het Staatse leger; hij verwierf roem in de strijd tegen Spanje tijdens de veroveringen van Coevorden (1592) en vooral Groningen (1594). Hij werd in 1595 gevangen genomen bij Dinslaken; in 1597 gewond bij Rijnberk.
Hij streed oa. in 1600 bij Leffinghem; in 1602 werd hij ritmeester der kurassiers; in 1605 gouverneur van Rijnberk.
Hij bestreed de Spanjaarden onder andere in Twente en de Gelderse Achterhoek. Daar veroverde hij in 1606 Lochem.
Pp 13 febr. 1607 werd hij veldmaarschalk; in 1610 luitenant-gouverneur van Gelderland en later ook van Utrecht.
Na de dood van zijn vader in 1606 verwierf hij op 30 mrt. 1607 bij de deling met zijn broeders Nassau-Dietz.
In 1620 volgde hij Willem Lodewijk op als stadhouder van Friesland, in 1625 Maurits in Groningen en Drente.
Vanaf 1625 werkte hij nauw samen met Frederik Hendrik, al was de persoonlijke verhouding met hem niet bepaald hartelijk te noemen. Hij heeft de Spanjaarden definitief uit Overijsel en Gelderland verdreven in 1626 en 1627.
Tijdens de bekende Maasveldtocht, waarbij onder andere Maastricht werd veroverd, werd hij dodelijk getroffen door een kogel tijdens het beleg van Roermond op 2 juni 1632.

Ernst Casimir (Dillenburg 22 december 1573 – Roermond 2 juni 1632) van 1606 tot 1632 graaf van Nassau-Dietz, van 1620 tot 1632 stadhouder van Friesland en van 1625 tot 1632 stadhouder van Groningen en Drenthe. Hij was een zoon van Jan van Nassau (broer van Willem van Oranje). Als graaf volgde hij zijn vader op, als stadhouder zijn oudere broer Willem Lodewijk.

Ernst Casimir was vooral bekend als een uitstekend militair leider. Zo veroverde hij onder andere de steden Steenwijk en Oldenzaal op de Spanjaarden. Door de bevolking van Friesland werd hij hoog gewaardeerd, hoewel hij weinig in Friesland aanwezig was. Als dank voor zijn militaire successen kreeg hij van de bevolking van Friesland de toezegging dat zijn zoon hem bij zijn dood kon opvolgen.

In juni 1632 overleed Ernst Casimir toen hij bij de inspectie van de loopgraven bij het beleg van Roermond door een kogel werd getroffen. Hij werd als graaf en stadhouder opgevolgd door zijn zoon Hendrik Casimir I.

Huwelijk en kinderen
Ernst Casimir was in 1597 gehuwd met de toen 14-jarige Sophia Hedwig van Brunswijk-Wolfenbüttel. Ze kregen negen kinderen, waarvan er twee volwassen werden:
* Hendrik Casimir I (1612-1640), ongehuwd
* Willem Frederik (1613-1664), gehuwd met Albertine Agnes van Oranje-Nassau en stamvader van het huidige koninklijk huis in Nederland.
