Louis Marie Anne Couperus was een Nederlandse schrijver en een van de eerste Nederlandse vertegenwoordigers van het literaire naturalisme.

Couperus' werk omvat allerlei uiteenlopende literaire genres. Hij debuteerde met poëzie, maar legde zich vervolgens al snel toe op psychologischeromans, waarmee hij de meeste bekendheid verwierf. Hij schreef daarnaast cultuursprookjes, historische romans en veel reisverslagen en columns. Inhet algemeen wordt hij gezien als een van de belangrijkste schrijvers uit de canon van de Nederlandse literatuur. De uitgave van zijn Volledige Werken(1987-1996) geldt als een van de eerste Nederlandse tekstedities die volgens wetenschappelijke, tekstkritische normen tot stand zijn gekomen
