Louis Couperus werd geboren te Den Haag als jongste van elf kinderen. Zijn ouders woonden op de Mauritskade 11 (nu 43), naast de Oranjekazerne. Zijn vader was mr. John Ricus Couperus, gepensioneerd raadsheer in het toenmalige Nederlands-Indië, zijn moeder Jonkvrouwe Catharina Geertruida Reynst. In 1872 vertrok hij met zijn ouders naar Batavia, Nederlands-Indië, waar zij woonden op Landgoed Tjicoppo in Buitenzorg. In 1878 keerde hij naar Nederland terug. Zijn ouders gingen wonen aan de Nassaukade 4 (later gedempt, en omgedoopt tot Nassauplein). In 1881 ging hij voor de akte M.O. Nederlands studeren, waarvoor hij in 1886 slaagde. In 1884 verhuisden zijn ouders naar Surinamestraat 20, waar hij in 1886 'Orchideeën' schreef.



Eline Vere


In 1888 verscheen zijn roman Eline Vere als feuilleton in het dagblad Het Vaderland; hij had toen al twee dichtbundels gepubliceerd die vrijwel onopgemerkt bleven, hoewel de kwaliteit van enkele gedichten wel degelijk werd erkend.



Huwelijk en reizen


Na een verblijf in Parijs trouwde hij in 1891 met zijn nicht Elisabeth Baud. Haar grootmoeder en de vader van Couperus waren broer en zus. Kort na zijn huwelijk begon het echtpaar Couperus reizen te maken, die hen naar talrijke landen voerden: Italië, Frankrijk, Duitsland en Engeland, Nederlands-Indië, Spanje en Japan. In Frankrijk vestigde Couperus zich enige tijd als schrijver in Nice. De Eerste Wereldoorlog bracht Couperus noodgedwongen door in Nederland, waar ook Eline Vere als theaterstuk werd opgevoerd.



Terugkeer naar Nederland en overlijden


In 1923 vestigde Louis Couperus zich in De Steeg, nabij Rheden, in een door vrienden en bewonderaars aangeboden huis, waar hij in juli 1923 op 60-jarige leeftijd overleed aan longvliesontsteking en bloedvergiftiging. Kort daarvoor was hij benoemd tot Ridder in de Orde van de Nederlandse Leeuw. Hij werd onder enorme belangstelling gecremeerd in het Crematorium Velsen te Driehuis. Zijn as werd een jaar later bijgezet op Begraafplaats Oud Eik en Duinen in Den Haag onder een monument met een afgebroken zuil. De as van zijn vrouw werd daar na haar dood in 1960 ook bijgezet.
