Notes about Gerrit Vuurens

Gerrit's father died when he was 5 or 6 years old. His mother dies when he is 16 years old. A bother of his mother, Gerrit van Dam, and a brother of his father, Cornelis Vuurens, are assigned as guardians. (Source wedding registry Amsterdam). It is unclear how he ended up in Amsterdam when he married at 21 years of age to the 28 year old Cornelia van Eijk.

On 11 April 1770, Gerrit performed a heroic recue of a 7 year old girl who had fallen into a canal in Amsterdam. The detailed description of the rescue is described here: "Historie en gedenkschriften van de Maatschappij, tot redding van drenkelingen, opgerecht binnen Amsterdam MDCCLXVII. Eerste Deel", case XXIX on pages 223, 224 and 225.

Was a witness on 1 Apr 1774 at the baptism of Neeltje van Eijk, daughter of Abram van Eijk, his brother in law, and Jannetje Janse. Source DTB Dutch Reformed Amsterdam, Westerkerk Book 112 p.199 (folio 98).

On 17 Apr 1776 Gerrit Vuurens and Cornelia van Eijk record their will in Amsterdam with Notaris Philippus Pot, Notarial Archives, Archive Nr 5075, Inv. Nr. 10192, Record Nr. 347004. They are living on the Lindegragt near the baangragt.

On the same day, 17 Apr 1776, Gerrit gives Power of Attorney to Cornelia van Eijk to handle all his affairs while he is going on a foreign trip. Notarial Archives of Philippus Pot, Archive Nr. 5075, Inv. Nr. 10192, Record Nr. 313776.

On 3 Jun 1776 Cornelia van Eijk gives power of attorney, on behalf of her husband Gerrit Vuurens who is probably travelling abroad at the time, to Pieter van Elst to deal with the legal sale house in Haastrecht located "op de kleine Have" to Gerrit Spruijt.

On 24 Sep 1777 Gerrit records another document leaving his wife, Cornelia van Eijk, in charge of his effects while he is going on another foreign trip. Notarial Archive of Philippus Pot in Amsterdam, Archive Nr. 5075, Inv. Nr. 10195, Record Nr 339080.

Gerrit's wife Cornelia van Eijk dies on 8 Apr 1778. It is unclear if he is in the country or not at that time. He obvisouly returns at some time and on 6 May 1784 he remarries in Amsterdam to Swaantje van der Veen.

There is a record at the Dutch east India company (VOC) of a Gerrit Vuuren from Amsterdam, who is hired as a "hooploper" (untrained deckhand). Leaving Amsterdam on 12 Dec 1784, Arriving at the Cape on 30 Mar 1785, Leaving the Cape on 29 Apr 1785, Arriving Batavia on 10 Jul 1785 returning in 1786. Leaving on the ship named Barbesteijn from Batavia on 12 Jan 1786, Arrival at the Cape 21 Apr 1786. Departing Cape 11 May 1786 and Arriving Amsterdam on 20 Aug 1786. Gerrit and family must have moved from Amsterdam to the Lopikerwaard, land of his birth, because he was buried in Waarder. He was survived by his second wife. In the Regional Archive of Rijnstreek and Lopikerwaard in the judicial archives of the township of Lange Ruige Weide (Schoutambacht of gerecht Lange Ruige Weide), which abuts Waarder, there is an act of indemnity for Zwaantje van der Veen, Gerrit's second wife, who is then the guardian of Jan and Cornelis Vuurens) on 27 Dec 1791.
