Notes about Thomas Anthony van der Willigen

Op 28 Maart overleed in een kliniek te Antwerpen T.A. van der Willigen, M.E., Geboren de 4den Augustus 1866 te Haarlem*, (moet zijn * Twello red.) bezocht aldaar de H.B.S., waarna hij aan het Hoboken Institute of Technology ( Stevens Institute) in New York het diploma van Werktuigkundig Ingenieur (M.E.) behaalde. Nog een achttal jaren verbleef hij in de V.S.., waar hij o.a. aan de United Gas Improvement Co. te Philadelphia verbonden was, welke firma zoowel gecarbureerd-watergas-installaties bouwde als gasfabrieken exploiteerde. In die jaren bracht hij reeds op een van zijn bezoeken aan Nederland gasgloeilicht-branders mede, die hier te lande toen nog niet ingevoerd waren. Door zijn studiegenoot A.G.Glasgow, werd hij in 1896 naar Engeland geroepen. Kort daarna werd hem de vertegenwoordiging voor Holland opgedragen van de firma Humphreys & Glasgow, constructeurs van gecarbureerd-watergas-installaties, waarbij zich al spoedig Belgi en Zwitserland voegden. Later, nadat hij was opgenomen in de "Board of Directors", behartigde hij ook de belangen van Messrs. Humphreys & Glasgow Ltd. bij de Parijsche maatschappij die de H. & G. installaties in Frankrijk bouwde. T.A. van der Willigen was gedurende vele jaren lid onzer Vereeniging. Hij ontbrak zelden of nooit op onze Algemeene Vergaderingen en leverde ook verscheidene bijdragen voor "Het Gas". De ouderen onder ons zullen zeer zeker een aangename herinnering aan hem bewaren. Met VAN DER WILLIGEN is een kundig en toch zeer bescheiden mensch heengegaan. Bijzonder prettig in den omgang, altijd in hetzelfde goede humeur, was hij steeds bereid anderen te helpen waar hij maar kon. Wij verliezen veel in hem, doch zullen hem dankbaar blijven herinneren.
