vlasser, kocht in 1722 een huis, schuur en vuurhuis in de grimhoek(oostvoorstraat) voor 368 guldens, hier legde hij de grondslag voor het vlasserijbedrijf, dat na hem nog 4 generaties van de oudste familietak tot het einde van de 19e eeuw is voortgezet. werd in 1720 kerkelijk vermaand vanwege dobbelen en spelen.

Matthijs en zijn broer Cornelis hebben het vissersbedrijf van hun vader niet Voortgezet en zijn vlassers geworden. Waarschijnlijk was dit een gevolg van het feit dat de vooruitzichten voor de zalmvisserij op de Oude Maas bij Oud-Beijerland niet rooskleurig waren en de vlasnering in dit dorp een grote vlucht nam. Verder zal van invloed zijn geweest dat de gebroeders trouw den met dochters van een vlasser. Beide vrouwen waren dochters van Cornelis Leendertsz. in ‘t Velt.
Deze was in 1711 al gestorven, maar zijn weduwe Maria Roos was hertrouwd met Barend Hendriksz. Watty die eveneens vlasser was. Matthijs Baers kocht in 1722 een huis, schuur en vuurhuis in de Grimhoek (het verlengde van de Oost-Voorstraat), voor 368 gulden. Het erf grensde aan de erven waar de familie van zijn vrouw de vlasserij bedreef. Hier legde hij de grondslag voor het vlasserijbedrijf dat na hem nog door vier generaties van de oudste fami lietak tot het einde van de 19e eeuw is voortgezet.
In 1729 breidde hij zijn zaak nog uit door de aankoop van een aangrenzend perceel met wo ning en schuur, van zijn zwager Teunis in ‘t Velt, voor 400 gulden. Achteraf bleek dat dit geen goede aanwinst was. Het perceel grensde aan twee zijden aan de grond die in bezit was van Barend Watty, de stiefvader van Matthijs’ vrouw. Barend Watty en zijn echtgenote Maria Roos leefden sedert 1725 al in onmin met elkaar. Haar kinderen, waaronder de vrouw van Matthijs, kozen partij voor hun moeder en zo ontstond er een gespannen verhouding met Barend Watty.

MATTHIJS LAURENSZ. BAERS ONDER KERKELIJKE CENSUUR
Enige bijzonderheden over het leven van Matthijs Baers staan vermeld in het Actenboek van de Kerkeraad van Ou Daarin werd in 1720 opgetekend dat een klacht was bin nengekomen dat Matthijs Laurensz. Baers sig sedert eenige tijd in ‘t speelen seer verliep. Er werd besloten hem deswegen te bestrajfen; tot afstand van dat ergerlijke gedrag te vermaanen en hem aan te seggen dat de Kerkeraad hem, bijfaute van bekeeringe, als een ergerlzjk litmaet sou moeten (be)handelen.
Kort daarop kreeg Matthijs huisbezoek van kerkeraadsleden en naar aanleiding daarvan werd het volgende in het Actenboek genoteerd: “Matthijs Baers was niet bij huis, dog sijn vrouw, diehet verloop van haer man in ‘t speelen met droefheid bekende, nam aan de bestraffing en bedrijging des Kerkeraads aan hem te communuceeren”.
Enige tijd later besloot men Matthijs Baers wel te noodigen (tot het HeiligAvondmaal), dog met een ernstige bestraffing over sijn dobbelen en speelen. Nadat dit besluit was uitgevoerd, werd de volgende aantekening in het Actenboek geplaatst: “Matthijs Baers was genoodigd; had de vermaning aangenomen en betuigde sig nog meer van dobbelen en speelen te sullen wagten”.
Zo was het afgedwaalde schaap weer tot de kudde teruggebracht en Matthijs heeft zich verder niet meer aan dergelijke uitspattingen bezondigd; de notulen van de kerkeraadsvergaderingen maken er althans geen melding van.
