In de donkere oorlogsjaren wordt Westmao,s nog door een noodlot getroffen, een grote uitslaande brand die midden op het dorp ontstaat in de vlassenj van de familie Bijl aan de Nieuwstraat.
De heersende zuid-oostelijke stormwind zorgt er voor dat brandende vlas lokken ver verspreid worden over de behuizingen van de Nieuwstraat tot aan het einde van de Maasdijk.
Veertien panden, waarvan de meesten nog van hout en met rieten dak, gaan hierbij in vlammen op, te weten:
De genoemde vlasfabriek van de familie Bijl aan de Nieuwstraat. de woning van Daniël Jan Bijl Bostiaanzn (Nieuwstraat 1), de woning van Bastiaan Adriartus Bijl LucasJanzn (Nieuwstraat 3), de woning van mevrouw Pietertje Johanna Bijl-int Veld (Nieuwstraat 5), de boerderij van Jan Quartel (Nieuwstraat 11). de manufacturenwinkel van Maria van Bergen-de Ruiter (Nieuwstraat 9), de woning van tuinder Leendert Stam, de woningen van de arbeiders Hendrik Molendijk, Nicolaas Hoek en Willem van Ellen, dewoning van rentenier Adriaan de Koomen. de (immerwinkel van Adam Willem van der Giesen, de schuur van handelaar Gijsbertus Plomp en de hoefsmederij van Aart Bijl Ariezn op de hoek Nieuwstraat-Smidsweg.
Naast de motorspuiten van Westmaas en Mijns heerenland, worden nog negen brandspuiten van omliggende dorpen ingeschakeld, waaronder brandspuiten uit Rotterdam en Dordrecht. Eerst dan kon de grote brand worden geblusi.
