Notes about Sian Njo "Oma Sian" Thé

Zij was de oudste uit een gezin van vier kinderen, haar zusjes Tien en Uien en een broertje Yan Hao. In de tijd waarin ze opgroeide was het heel gewoon dat meisjes niet naar school gingen. Desondanks kon ze heel goed onthouden. Dat blijkt o.a. uit pantoen (=verzen) wedstrijden die ze met haar zusjes hield. Ze blonk daarin uit en ook in de ingewikkelde kookkunst die ze van haar moeder leerde. Ook was ze heel handig in het borduren aan traditionele Chinese kledij, zoals versieringen aan knopen voor heren.
Als jong meisje bezocht ze vaak een Chinese tempel waar ze wierook stokjes brandde. Later bekeerde ze zich tot het Christendom.
