Jan was vissre van beroep. In 1821 was hij schipper. Hij staat als stuurman (schipper) te boek in de staat van goederen van de overleden Hendrik Smits, broodbakker te Pernis, opgemaakt op verzoekvan zijn weduwe Adriaantje 't Hart in november 1821. Geboekt staan o.a. vorderingen op bemanningen van schepen. Zo is er een vordering op "den Stuurman Jan van Velen, zeventien Guldens dertog cents" (prot. not. J.L. van Rijsoort 1821, N.A. Rotterdam nr. 675 bl 480).
