    Hij ging met zijn gezin, dochter Pietertje, zonen Bastaan Hans, Jacob, zijn dochter Jacoba met haar man Izaak Hendrik Vermooten en hun zoontje Henkie emirgreren naar Zuid -Afrika. Zij vertrokken 25 maart 1883 uit Brielle naar Rotterdam, om vandaar per boot naar Zuid Afrika te reizen. Zij hielden van de tocht op zee en in Zuid Afrika een dagboek bij.
