Notes about Gerrit van der Steen
Gerrit vertrok, 18 jaar oud, rond 1898 uit Pernis. De industrialisatie van het dorp verdrong de visserij. Voor het nageslacht is dit een belangrijke beslissing gebleken. Hij was o.a. amanuensis aan de VU en schooladministrateur van de HBS aan de Moreelsestraat. Was zeer actief in kerk- en schoolzaken. Heeft zich krachtig ingezet tijdens de "Schoolstrijd" voor de bijzondere school. Heeft jarenlang als schoolinspecteur gefunctioneerd en was langdurig bestuurslid van de MULO-school aan de Amaliastraat in Amsterdam. In kerkzaken heeft hij zich dienstbaar gemaakt voor het zondagsschoolwerk. Was vele jaren ouderling, scriba en afgevaardigde naar de Generale Synode van de Gereformeerde Kerk. In de beginjaren van zijn huwelijk heeft hij ook veel gedaan voor de blindenbond.
