Pauline Berens: The Hebelermeer birth and marriage (30 APR 1895) records say B.J. Mensen was born in 1856, so do the emigration records. The grafestone and American census records though mention 1871 as year of birth, which is not correct. I double checked the Hebelemeer church records, there's no way some older brother born in 1856 died young and a younger brother with the same name born in 1871 married M.C. Wüpker. The mistake showed up the first time in the 1900 American census.

    Bob Behnen:
Emigration: Bremen to Baltimore on the ship Weimar arriving 3 Oct 1895: Bernhard Mensen, 40 (ancestry notes age as 46 but the record actually shows 40); Maria Mensen, 29 from Hebelermeer traveling to Clinton, IL. She is a half-sister to the Schlepers from Breese, IL.
The 1900 census shows him being born Aug 1870 and the 1920 census shows birth year about 1871 too. His burial record at St. Dominic's in Breese notes "Bernard Joseph Mensen, son of John B. Mensen and Catherine Brockman, born 1 Aug 1868".
