George W. Winder was born in "Blunt" County, Tenn. about 1834. He gave his age as 28 when he enlisted in Co E, 87th Illinois Vol. Inf, on 15 Aug 1862 at "McLeansboro" (McLean), IL He was discharged by certificate of disability on 4 May 1863 at the General Hospital, Benton Barracks, MO, where he had been hospitalized for two months. Reason for discharge: "Chronic Inflammation of the liver - also chronic bronchitis causing the loss of voice - contracted in the service - He is not fit for any kind of service." In 1899 he gave his wife's maiden name as Sarah Mayfield and stated that they were married 13 October 1893 by J. R. Winder. An affidavit in file by J. R. Winder dated 15 Feb 1895, states J R was 41 years old, a resident of Greenville, Wayne County, MO. The affidavit said, in part: For the first ten yearsafter he came home in 63 he was not able to do anything.. not even make a fire. I lived with him til 74 when he married and then lived close by & have ever since. ...The years 81 and 82 he lived in the house with me. ...He is unable to do anything. An affidavit from William Berry, of 8 Oct 1892, a resident of Greenville, MO stated that George Winder was unable to do manual work of any kind. ..."He owns no home, has no estate or property, and no one is legally bound for his support. He is a widower and has a little girl about 6 years old to support." Info on his family given by George Winder in 1899 seems uncertain as to its accuracy. He listed a previous marriage to Mary Jane Winder, who "died 1866 or 7, Near then in Illinois" He listed his children as James Robert, born 24 Jan 1853; Martha Winder, born 26 Aug 1876; and Netta Winder, born 9 Mar 1886. It appears that George may have been married three times, and was confused about the dates of these marriages by 1899. Sorry, seem to have missed date and place of death !
