Notes about Rachel Bates

Birth: unknown
Death: Dec. 24, 1789

(See also KITCHEL, RACHEL)
Rachel (nee Bates) Kitchell, who died on Christmas Eve in "the 75th year of her age", was born c.1714. She was the widow of Joseph Kitchell, Esq., who had predeceased her 10 years earlier. Rachel's name appears on the southern side of the granite, Victorian era monument marking the grave of her celebrated son, Aaron Kitchell, and his wife Phebe. The brown sandstone stele that had originally marked her grave may be seen in the rear of the church, inches away from its foundation. Rachel's remains are most likely located beneath the church, a common situation when the footprint of a colonial era structure is expanded over the years, and the graves closest to the earlier building are either covered by additions to it or by a replacement.
