    03:45 uur. Het gaat op meerdere plekken fout. Het zeewater slaat vier gaten in de dijken bij Nieuw Vossemeer en stroomt met een rotgang de polders in bij Nieuw-Vossemeer en Halsteren. Op de Kortendijk sterven zeven bewoners, op de Pelsendijk 23 mensen. Velen worden verrast in hun slaap en hebben geen schijn van kans.

    Vijftig doden waren er te betreuren in Nieuw-Vossemeer. In het dorpshart staat een peilstok die aangeeft hoe hoog het water kwam. Bij Nieuw-Vossemeer werd in 1960 de laatste vermiste in Brabant teruggevonden.

    Van de 1686 inwoners van Nieuw-Vossemeer werden er 1398 geëvacueerd. Sommigen in de directe omgeving, anderen zo ver als Limburg en Gelderland. In april keerden de eerste bewoners terug maar pas eind 1954 keerden de laatsten terug naar Nieuw-Vossemeer.
