Notes about Antonius Cornelis "Anton" Martens

In 1928 is Anton Martens voor het eerst in Schiedam werkzaam in een slagerij bij G.J. Koster in de Fabristraat. Dan in 1931, voor drie maanden bij Vleeschhouwerij Molendijk. Daarna van 7 december 1931 t/m 22 oktober 1938 bij NV Voor Den Verkoop van Vleesch Goed en Goedkoop; zijn ontslag is het gevolg van overtal aan persooeel. Na een periode van werkloosheid is hij kortstoodig hulp slager bij C. Jamin en M. Crone. Bij deze laatste is hij na de oorlog vaste slager van 1945 tot 1952. In april van dat jaar stapt hij over naar Modelslagerij C. Groeneveld in de Sint Liduinastraat en vervolgens in oktober 1955 naar Keurslagerij M.J. van de Water in de Beierlandsestraat. Vanaf juni 1961 tot pensionering werkt hij bij Poot's Vleeswarenfabriek.

De handboogschietvereniging De Romeinen in Rotterdam
In een gesprek is verteld dat tal van Martens-en zich hebben bezig gehouden met handboog-schieten en dit nu nog doen. Het is een georganiseerde sport welke is ontstaan toen de boog als gevechtswapen in onbruik raakte. Het boogschieten heeft zich gehandhaafd in de schuttersgilden, die reeds in de middeleeuwen als weerbaarheidsverenigingen ontstonden. De oude tradities van koningsschieten en optochten worden nog steeds in ere gehouden. De hoogste eer voor een boogschutter bestaat erin een koning of keizer van de vereniging te zijn. Wanneer een schutter zich driemaal tot koning heeft geschoten, wordt deze keizer. Het boogschieten is een druk beoefende sport in België en Zuid-Nederland. Niettemin zijn ook elders verenigingen aanwezig, zo ook in Rotterdam. In 1919 is daar de kruisboogvereniging Koningin Wilhelmina opgericht. Mede aan de wieg van die vereniging staan vier broers uit de familie Martens: Adrianus (Janus) Willebrordus Johannes; Hendrikus (Harrie) Willebrordus Antonius; Godefridus (Frits) Johannes en Guillaume (Chiem) Gerardus. Op 1 oktober 1922 gaat de vereniging op in de Hand- en Kruisboogvereniging De Romeinen. Deze laatste is opgericht op 18 juli 1918 en vierde in 1993 haar 75-jarige bestaan. In die periode hebben verschillende van Martens, maar ook aangetrouwden zich sportief en bestuurlijk in de vereniging onderscheiden.

In 1950 krijgt de vereniging de opdracht om een interland tussen België en Nederland te organiseren. Daarmee belasten zich o.a. J.M. Tillemans, G.J. Martens en A.J.H. Martens. De schutters van Nederland verloren de wedstrijd kansloos van hun tegenstanders.
De Romeinen doen mee aan diverse promotie-evenementen: in 1955 aan de Rotterdamse E-55 en tot en met 1958 op de FEMINA. In 1970 vindt in het kader van de C-70 manifestatie in Rotterdam een internationale wedstrijd plaats aan het Langepad.
De vereniging heeft haar clubgebouw aan het Prinsenmolenpad (vh Bergse Rechter Rottekade).
