Dirk bouwde in IJmuiden tweemaal een hotel, de Willem Barentz I en II. Daarna ging hij naar Amsterdam en begon aan de bouw van een groot hotel, waaraan hij failliet ging. Hij eindigde zijn leven als reclameloper voor het Tuschinsky theater.
