Notes about Johannes de Vries

Dagloner, bediende, vanaf 1893 tapper.
Nationale Militie, lichting 1879/1880, loting nr 36, vrijgesteld uit hoofde van "te zijn eenige wettige zoon".

Een jaar later in 1881 meldde hij zich op zijn 21e vrijwillig aan bij het Koloniaal Wapendepot in Harderwijk om zes jaar als militair te dienen in Nederlands Oost-Indië. Hiervoor kreeg hij direct Fl.300 handgeld. Bij aanname in Harderwijk was hij “beperkt met een niet hinderlijke wanstaltigheid van de linker wijsvinger”. Verder signalement: bruin haar, bruine wenkbrauwen en bruine ogen, 1.70m.
In augustus 1881 vertrok hij als “fuselier” vanuit Rotterdam om ongeveer 6 week later in Batavia aan te komen. Daar werd hij ingedeeld bij de infanterie. Vanaf 1883 vocht hij vier jaar mee in de oorlog tegen Atjeh. Hij kreeg het “Eereteken voor belangrijke krijgsverrichtingen”.

Op 4 mei 1886 ontsnapte hij aan de dood. Bij een nachtelijke aanval op het militaire kamp in Poeloe Bras (Noord Atjeh) liep hij een “gehouwen wond aan de hals” op. Twee Nederlandse soldaten werden gedood, nog drie anderen eveneens gewond. Door zijn verwonding zou hij blijvend ongeschikt blijven voor alle militaire diensten. Hem werd een jaarlijks pensioen toegekend van Fl. 320. Daarnaast kreeg hij nog de bronzen medaille. Met een certificaat van goed gedrag vertrok hij in november 1887 weer naar Nederland, waar hij in januari 1888 aankwam.
De aanval waarbij hij gewond raakte staat beschreven in het Koloniaal Verslag van 1887, dat is opgenomen in de Handelingen van de Tweede Kamer der SG.
