Volgens Heleen Smit was Helena Bartelds haar overgrootmoeder inwonend bij Eppo Doornbos. Helena kreeg negen kinderen waarvan de vader onbekend was. Eppo en zijn vrouw Hindrikje kregen zelf geen kinderen. Helena als moeder erkende haar kinderen steeds, maar noemde geen vader. Toch zijn de kinderen vernoemd, zoals Jakob en Eppo. Eppo en Helena staan samen op een grafsteen als man en vrouw. De onderste regel van de steen is rust zacht lieve ouders, maar een huwelijk is niet gevonden. Ook bij overlijden van Eppo en Helena wordt geen partner genoemd. Bij het overlijden van Hindrikje Haan wordt Eppo wel als echtgenoot genoemd. In een krantenadvertentie bij het overlijden van Helena wordt zij "vrouw van..." genoemd.
