Kon niet schrijven, zoals in huwelijksakte Berend en Harmke Jansen staat.
Wat een leven; Op haar derde overleed haar moeder, op haar vijfde haar vader. Haar ouders waren nooit getrouwd. Haar vader Gerhard was als gastarbeider vanuit Duitsland gekomen naar het arme veengebied de Ekamp, en sprak slecht Nederlands. Haar moeder net zo, ook van Duitse komaf. Opgevoed bij haar stiefmoeder Geessien Koek samen met haar twee zussen, stiefbroer Ties en stiefzusje Trientje. Het leven van Geessien was ook een toestand. Van de vijf kinderen van Willem Westerman en Jantjenbereikten alleen Berend en Gerhard een hoge leeftijd, Gerhardt, Frederik en Hilke overleden vroeg. Haar zoon Berend trouwde twee keer maar had geen kinderen, haar jongste zoon Gerhard trouwde een paar jaar voor haar overlijden. Hij zou uiteindelijk meer dan 500 nakomelingen krijgen, maar dat heeft zij nooit geweten. Haar man Willem overleed uiteindelijk in het armenhuis. Gerhard zei later dat hij "arm" was opgegroeid.
