De werf werd opgericht in 1860 en was gespecialiseerd in het bouwen van sloepen.
Over de bijnaam ‘bootjemoaker’ zei de laatste sloepenbouwer Roelf Oorburg (geboren in 1914) in 1989 in een interview: ‘Wie hebben dus aaltied sloepen-baauwer west.
Mor ze zeden wel aaltied bootjebaauwer Oorburg.
Zoksen as Grol wazzen helgen-boazen of scheepsbaauwer.
Dij muiken schepen. Wie haren ook gain helgen, wie haren n schure, doar we boten in
muiken. Hai stait ter nog, hai is allaine wat körter mokt.’
Zowel het Noordelijk Scheepvaart Museum in Groningen als het Veenkoloniaal Museum in Veendam bewaren nog een sloep gebouwd door Oorburg.

Sluiskade
Via de schipperskamer bereikt men de sluiskade. Een winkel en een café waren bij elke sluis te vinden. De schipper moest immers wachten alvorens geschut te kunnen worden. Vaak had men hier de kans om even van boord te gaan. Naast de winkel zien we een schuurtje van een sloepenbouwer. De sloep werd in 1948 door ‘botenbouwer’ Oorburg uit Veendam gebouwd voor schipper Stemmer.

Korte geschiedenis van dit schip
De "Krab" is in 1932 gebouwd bij Oorburg te Lemmer in opdracht van een tjalkschipper. De zoon van deze tjalkschipper was een vriend van de vader van de heer Arts (huidige eigenaar). Als deze familie als 1e eigenaar wordt beschouwd is de heer Artsde 3e eigenaar. De 2e eigenaar heeft het schip slechts 5 jaar in bezit gehad en heeft er in die 5 jaar niets aan gedaan, zodat er ook niets verpest is, behalve verwaarlozing. De "Krab" is in 1970 in bezit van de heer Arts gekomen en in 1971 is alle verwaarlozing teniet gedaan en was het schip weer als nieuw. Door zorgvuldig onderhoud is de huidige staat dus nog steeds vrijwel origineel.
De "Krab" is inmiddels 91 jaar oud en oogt als nieuw.
