Jo groeide op op een melkveebedrijf in Ripon, Californië. De jongste van drie kinderen, ze was pas vijf toen haar moeder stierf. Op twaalfjarige leeftijd was Jo verantwoordelijk voor het koken en schoonmaken voor het gezin en de landarbeiders.
In 1958 trouwde Jo met Vern Ehlers, een nerdy jonge natuurkundige. Het echtpaar vestigde zich uiteindelijk in Grand Rapids om hun gezin te stichten en werd lid van de Eastern Avenue Christian Reformed Church
kinderen, kleinkinderen en achterkleinkinderen: Heidi en Bob Rienstra (Sara [Savannah, Caelan], Tim en Stephanie [Malik], Andrew en Abby), Brian Ehlers, Marla Ehlers, Todd Ehlers en Mirjam Schaller (Anouk, Zoelle), evenals door haar zussen en zwager Helen Meulink (Grand Rapids, MI), Frances en Jake Engel (Ripon, CA), en Henrietta Buurma (Willard, OH), en door velen nichtjes en neefjes.
