Lubbigje Schaapman, die onlangs met haar ouders naar Californië was verhuisd, schreef haar vriendin Willemientje Beltman in Overijssel over de Nederlandse nieuwkomers in haar omgeving: "Je ziet wel dat de jongens blijven komen, maar geen meisjes. Hier zijn 10 Nederlandse jongens, maar slechts 2 Nederlandse meisjes." Het jaar daarop probeerde Schaapman haar vriendin ervan te overtuigen niet in de huishoudelijke dienst te gaan, maar naar de Verenigde Staten te komen. Haar manier om dit te regelen was om op te merken dat een van de huurlingen die ze kende terug zou gaan naar Nederland en daar waarschijnlijk een vrouw zou zoeken. 'Kijk, zo kun je mee. Schaapman overtuigde haar vriendin niet, maar ze trouwde niet lang daarna zelf met een van de lokale 'jongens' Berend Meulink). De familie Schaapman verhuisde van een bakstenen boerderij/schuur in Overijssel naar een houten kozijnhuis van twee verdiepingen.
