Notes about Hercules van OBBERGEN

broer in het buitenland - geen naam bekend - we weten dat Antoon het spoor volgde van Hercules van Obbergen. Dit is zeer waarschijnlijk zijn oudere broer Hercules. (zie verder)

Waarschijnlijk omstreeks 1530 in Mechelen geboren.

-------------------------------------------------

In his early years Hercules von Oberberg worked for Johann of Brandenburg-Küstrin but on 17 July 1557 he became Royal Building Master, succeeding Martin Bussert, but he only stayed in the position for two years. During that time he worked on Copenhagen Castle and Koldinghus (minor renovations), Sønderborg Castle (planning and commenced rebuilding), the Fortifications of Copenhagen and Krogen (the bastioned fortifications).

On 29 August 1559 he was employed by Duke Hans the Elder in Haderslev where he stayed until his death. In 1559-60 he directed the extension of Hansborg with two new wings and a tower. During Duke Hans' last years he was also responsible for the reconstruction and fortification of Tønderhus. In 1591 he worked on Gottorf Castle, where he is credited for the gables of the northern wing.

In 1598 Christian IV charged von Oberberg, by then an oldman, with the huge tower and castle church at Koldinghus.

Introduced the Floris style in Denmark, seen today at Sønderborg Castle, which he transformed from a Medieval fortress into a Renaissance castle for Christian III. The style is particularly characteristic of the castle church. It was also seen in the gables of Sønderborg Castle and Gottorp Castle's northwing as well as thouse of Tønderhus and Tønning Palace. As a military architect von Oberberg was fairly old-fashioned, relying mainly on Direr's theories.

Via Hercules is Antonius van Obbergen in Denemarken aan de slag kunnen gaan. Eerst als werkman maar al snel kon Antonius van Obbergen opklimmen tot bouwmeester.

A.Hercules van Obbergen

Ir. D. F. Slothouwer wrote an extensive study concerning the renaissance building in Danmark, introduced by people of the Low Countries. He mentions that Hercules van Obbergen worked in his youth for count (markgraaf) Johann of Brandenburg-Küstrin.
There he worked at the fortifications of Küstrin, the capital of the protestant county.

Probably the time Hercules spended in Küstrin was part of his education. Craftsmen made study tours and had to make a masterpiece to be recognised as master by their corporation. Later also Antonius van Obbergen made a study tour to Küstrin.

In 1557 Hercules was engaged by King Christian III as royal building master to adapt the castle of Copenhagen. After the crowning of Frederik II in 1559, Hercules started to work for Hans the elder, Duke of Sleeswijk-Holstein and brother of Christian III.
He builded at the Sonderborg Castle and the church of the castle. This church was created in the style of Cornelius Floris de Vriendt of Antwerp. (Italian Renaissance)

During his occupation by Duke Hans the elder Hercules worked also for the kings Frederik II and Christian IV. So it is possible that he advised Frederik II of Denmark to engage Antonius van Obbergen to solve the problems with the Kronborg Castle in Helsingør.

Hercules lived from 1559 until his death in December 1602 at Haderslev.
His grave in the church of Kalundborg has no mention of his birthdate.

We have seen above that both Hercules and Antonius visited Küstrin in their youth.
Hercules was influenced by Cornelius Floris de Vriendt of Antwerp who also educated Antonius. Antonius was engaged in Denmark to solve the problems created by the building master Hans van Paesschen.

In a deed registered by the bench of aldermen of the village Steenokkerzeel in 1565 Antonius van Obbergen, son of late Daneel (son of Hendrik) and Clara Bossers, is also acting for his brother who is outside the country ! ( Archives of the Belgian State at Leuven, Bench of the Aldermen of Steenokkerzeel, register 6996, f° 144 r & v of January 22th, 1565)

Probably Hercules is this brother of Antonius, who was abroad in 1565 ! I estimate his birthdate approximately 1530. Antonius was born in 1543.
