Op 10-07-1820 verhuisde de familie Nieuwenhuis vanuit Groningen, waar zij in grote armoede geleefd moeten hebben, naar kolonie I in het Drentse Frederiksoord. Christiaan wist zich als eerste uit de kolonie te ontworstelen en vertrok rond 1850 naar de gemeente Dwingeloo.
Christiaan vestigde zich definitief in de gemeente Dwingeloo. Hij is, zeg maar, de "stamvader " van alle families Nieuwenhuis die later in Dwingeloo voorkomen. Op zich mag dit een wonder heten, want deze familie werd geteisterd door ellende. Zonen Jannes en Klaas verdronken op jonge leeftijd en dochters Johanna en Aaltje werden slechts 18 jaar respectievelijk 2 maanden oud. Er bleef slechts een mannelijke nazaat over. Zoon Lubbert.
Deze huwde eveneens in de gemeente Dwingeloo op 05-05-1886 met de uit Beilen afkomstige Zwaantje van Goor.
