Notes about Gerrit Schuil

Gerrit was afkomstig uit een arm gezin. De kinderen moesten allen te voet, op klompen naar school, terwijl het ook regel was dat zij iedere dag, zowel de jongens als de meisjes, 10 toeren per dag moesten breien aan hun sokken. Het gezin was streng gereformeerd en dit zinde Gerrit eigenlijk niet bijzonder. Toen hij vervolgens op 12-jarige leeftijd de lagere school verliet, werd hij ondergebracht bij een timmermansgezin. Dit gezin was nog strenger in het geloof en eiste dat Gerrit iedere zondag tweemaal naar de kerk ging. Dit was voor hem iets te veel van het goede. Om bij dit gezin weg te komen, zaagde hij, "per ongeluk" alle latten en planken die hij moest zagen te kort. Hierdoor werd hij bedankt voor zijn aanwezigheid en kon hij, zoals hij had gehoopt, vertrekken.

Ook de wijze waarop Gerrit verkering kreeg met zijn vrouw was bijzonder. Hij had namelijk eerst verkering met de oudere zuster van Antje Drent. Deze werd op een gegeven ogenblik ziek en Antje werd verzocht om dit bericht over te brengen. Toen zij Gerrit dit vertelde gaf deze als antwoord: "Nou, dan blifst doe toch, wicht.", waarna de eerste steen voor hun huwelijk was gelegd.

De kinderen van Gerrit en Antje waren divers van haardos en ogen. Diewertje had namelijk pikzwart haar en bruine ogen, Frans, Harm, Renske hadden vrij normaal haar, Matje was rossig met grijze ogen, Jan Hendrik rossig met blauwe ogen en Gijsbertha rossig met bruine ogen.
