‘En op het kerkhof ligt een grafsteen, waarop gebeiteld staat: >1643 den 13 November is overleden de eerw. en godzalige Gabbe Pualus, Bedienaar bij de
Waterlandsche Doopsgezinde Gemeente te Surhuisterven, oud 72 jaren<. Naast dezen steen is een ander van zijne vrouw, die het volgend jaar in even hoogen ouderdom overleed. Zij schijnen, volgens de beschrijving dier steenen, menschen van aanzien geweest te zijn, en de jaren van den Leeraar pleiten wel voor den vroegen oorsprong der Gemeente
