Aan dat losse leven van een aflosser werd ik zojuist weer eens herinnerd door een mail van iemand waar ik 37 jaar geleden vier dagen mee had gevaren.
Ik was toen wat we bij Wagenborg "de dertiende man" noemden.
Dat was in de tijd toen we als een van de allereersten een mooi verlofsysteem draaiende hadden. Wagenborg had toen ruim 40 schepen en die werden onderverdeeld in groepen van telkens drie ongeveer gelijke schepen.
Voor drie schepen waren er vier kapiteins - drie vaste plus een aflosser.
Vervolgens werden er dan telkens weer drie groepen samengevoegd, dus 9 schepen met 12 kapiteins, en daar overheen werd dan een extra "dertiende man" gezet om onverwachte situaties op te vangen zoals ziekte, ongevallen, familieomstandigheden en soms ook overlijden.

Dat laatste was het geval een boord van dat schip waar ik na 37 jaar aan werd herinnerd.
Ik schreef in die tijd alles op - nog steeds, eigenlijk - en dus hoefde ik maar te grijpen om dit te vinden:
