Uit de inschrijving in het militieregister blijkt o.a. dat Jan:
- 1.65 m groot is, blauwe ogen en bruine haren heeft
- op 10 maart 1880 is aangewezen voor de dienstplicht
- op 11 mei 1880 is ingelijfd in het regiment vestingartillerie

In 1875 staat Jan Voorhaar als gedaagde vermeld in een klapper op naam van de veroordeelden van de Arrondissementsrechtbank Amsterdam. Op 6 augustus 1975 is in Hilversum een proces verbaal opgemaakt, de daaruit volgende dagvaarding wordt op 4 november 1875 betekend aan Jan Voorhaar, Matthijs Lam en Johannes van der Waarden. De zaak komt 17 oktober 1875 voor bij de arrondissementsrechtbank in Amsterdam. Jan en Matthijs zijn 15, Johannes is 16 jaar. Zij worden schuldig verklaard aan 'diefstal door meer dan één persoon op een plaats die met een bewoond huis wordt gelijkgesteld'. Zij worden veroordeeld tot 'eene gevangenzetting voor den tijd van drie dagen, in eenzame afsluiting te ondergaan en solidair'. Uit de overwegingen blijkt dat zij om 5 uur in de vroege morgen van 6 augustus ten nadele van Levie Benjamin de Leeuw in de tuin achter diens woning in Hilversum 'arglistig hebben afgeplukt en zich hebben toegeëigend eene hoeveelheid peren'. De beklaagden bekennen en getuige De Leeuw verklaart gezien te hebben dat zij hun zakken met peren hebben gevuld en een ogenblik daarna de peren onder elkaar hebben verdeeld. Uitvoerig wordt daarbij de ligging van de tuin ten opzichte van de straat en omliggende percelen beschreven, waaruit blijkt dat deze alleen vanuit het woonhuis van De Leeuw normaal toegankelijk is. Ook al waren de beklaagden ten tijde van de diefstal nog geen 16 jaar, toch wordt hen het oordeel des onderscheids toegedicht, gelet ook op houding en antwoorden ter terechtzitting. De straf valt vijf dagen lager uit dan de acht dagen door de officier gevraagd.
