Notes about Abraham Huigen

Abraham Huigen was in religieus opzicht zeer zwaar op de hand. Hij behoorde tot extreem orthodoxe kringen. Geregeld trok hij het land in om als voorganger op te treden. Een handkar met stichtelijke boeken was vaak zijn reisgenoot. Zijn opvattingen en levenswijze maakten het leven voor zijn vrouw en kinderen erg moeilijk. Hij was vaak langere tijd afwezig en voor zijn gezin niet bereikbaar, ook niet in tijden dat zijn aanwezigheid door omstandigheden gewenst was. Wanneer hij wel thuis was drukte dat ook een stempel op het gezinsleven. Zijn dochter Antje Margaretha (mijn moeder - jv) heeft er mede om die reden naar verlangd op eigen benen te staan. Hij is in familiekring wel gekaraktiseerd als godsdientwaanzinnig.

Meerdere krantenartikelen getuigen van zijn aanwezigheid tijdens vergaderingen van de kiesvereniging van de Staatkundig Gereformeerde Partij. Veelal was 'vriend A. Huigen' degene die de avond met dankzegging afsloot. Als voorbeeld noem ik een bijeenkomst in het najaar van 1932. De voorzitter van de kiesvereniging heeft een studie gemaakt van de doodstraf en houdt over dat thema een doorwrochte lezing. Hij concludeert "Valsche humaniteit deed tot opheffing [van de doodstraf] besluiten, ten onzent in 1870". Hij betoogt "hoe het recht roept tot wederinvoering van de doodstraf".
Tijdens een andere vergadering van deze kiesvereniging voert Huigen zelf het woord. Op 26 april 1934 spreekt hij over het thema "Rechts en toch niet recht", waarin hij aantoont dat "alles wat zich als rechts aandient, daarom nog niet als recht aangemerkt kan worden'

Het gezin Huigen-de Boorder woonde in de Spoorbuurt. Deze buurt te Zaandam-west tussen de Provincialeweg, de Botenmakersstraat, de Klokbaai en de Parkstraat. De buurt, voorzien van koninklijke straatnamen als Nassaustraat, Emmastraat, Anna Paulownastraat, Willemstraat, Oranjestraat en Mauritsstraat werd aan het einde van de 19e eeuw aangelegd. Verder behoorden de Oranjesteeg, Oranjedwarsstraat en de 2e Oranjestraat tot deze buurt (ook het gezin Voorhaar-Boterman woonde in deze buurt. Dit is ongetwijfeld de reden van de relatie tussen mijn ouders, mijn vader woonde op de Willemstraat, mijn moeder op de Oranjestraat - jv).

In de jaren '80 van de 20e eeuw kwam de buurt met regelmaat in het nieuws. De gemeente had tot sloop besloten; de bewoners kwamen in verzet tegen dit besluit. In 1990 werden de nieuwbouwplannen voor de nieuwe Spoorbuurt gepresenteerd; een flink aantal van de oude woningen was toen al gesloopt. In de nieuw gebouwde wijk zijn deze straatnamen niet overgenomen.
