Zijn ouders waren Anne Cornelis de Koe en Wilhelmina Arnolda de Mol Moncourt. Hij is 24 Juni 1880 te Utrecht gehuwd met jonkvr. Isabella Antoinette Michielena Cornelia van Asch van Wijk. Hij studeerde te Groningen en te Utrecht in de godgeleerdheid en werd predikant te Lienden 6 Maart 1870, te Buitenpost 13 Oct. 1872, te Utrecht 1 Febr. 1874. Hij werd hier doctor theologiae 2 Mei 1883 op een dissertatie: De conjecturaal-critiek en het Evangelie naar Johannes (Utr. 1883), aangekondigd in Stemmen voor Waarheid en Vrede (1883) I, 658. Deze dissertatie en zijn beoordeeling van een opstel van J.I. Doedes (zie dl. II, kol. 397 v.), Het gezag en de waarde der handschriften van den Griekschen tekst des N.T., leidden tot zijn benoeming als hoogleeraar te Groningen, waar hij zijn inaugureele rede hield op 26 Oct. 1884 over Het algemeene en het bijzondere in het geschiedkundig deel der Christelijke godgeleerdheid (Gron. 1884). Van de Bijbelverklaring voor het volk, waaraan hij ook als redacteur medewerkte, verscheen slechts één aflevering in 1883.
