Op 1 oktober 2010 is op 90-jarige leeftijd de heer Jaap Vermeer overleden. Met hem is een groot liefhebber van het Ronde en Platbodemwezen heengegaan. Mijnheer Vermeer, zoals de meeste van ons hem kennen, was de schrijver van een aantal monografieën voor de Stichting Stamboek en van de trilogie der Friese kromstevens.
De schitterende boeken 'Tjotters en Boatsjes', 'Het Friese Jacht' en 'De Boeier' kwamen van zijn hand. Voor dit alles kreeg hij de Aureliaprijs en later de Zilveren Anjer uitgereikt. Naast zijn encyclopedische kennis van de verschillende schepen van deze typen die ooit bestaan hebben of nog bestaan, kende hij bovendien in bijna alle gevallen ook hun geschiedenis en die van de vele eigenaren. In al zijn bescheidenheid beriep hij zich de laatste jaren vaak op het feit dat zijn geheugen minder was geworden. Dat leek vooral een excuus voor de eventuele fouten die hij zou kunnen gaan maken, maar eerlijk gezegd eigenlijk, ook toen, nooit maakte. In 2000 werd hij benoemd tot eredonateur van onze Stichting.
Na zijn technische opleiding ging hij werken bij de KEMA in Arnhem en promoveerde op een van zijn professionele onderwerpen. Maar naast zijn werk was hij, samen met zijn vrouw actief in de antroposofische beweging, en een verwoed zeiler. Ze volgden samen, vlak na de Tweede Wereldoorlog de cursussen die de ANWB toen gaf op het gebied van kamperen. Ze maakten zelf hun tent, en trokken daarmee de natuur in. In latere jaren toen hij het Friesche jacht 'De Rode Leeuw' bezat, later enige tijd samen met de tjotter 'Albert en Nelly', werd er naast de wedstrijden en tochtjes op de Rijn bij Arnhem, elke zomer via de IJssel naar Fries­land gevaren waar dan met het gezin de vakantie werd doorgebracht. Daar ook werd er, mede op zijn initiatief, de voortaan jaarlijks te houden "de Regionale Friese Reünie" opgericht. Samen met Heit Piersma en Klaas van Douwen was hij daarvan oprichter en de grote stimulator.
Van huis uit kreeg hij het antroposofische gedachtegoed aangereikt, en hij wist dat op een bewonderenswaardige manier ook in de praktijk toe te passen. Status en poeha waren hem vreemd, maar dienstbaarheid aan anderen, en afmaken waar je aan begonnen bent paste helemaal in zijn levenswijze. Hij stond, steeds samen met zijn vrouw, aan de wieg van het antroposofische opvang- en verzorgingshuis bij Nijmegen, waar zijn broer later werd verpleegd, en was initiatiefnemer van een soortgelijke voorziening voor jongeren in Friesland te Appelscha: het huis "Olm en Es". Na zijn werkzame leven in Arnhem verhuisde hij naar Hemelum, waar hij uitzag vanuit zijn huis op zijn geliefde Morra en de Galamadammen. Vanaf dat moment ging hij aan de slag met het verder onderzoeken voor en schrijven van zijn boeken. Zoals gezegd was hij een zeer aimabele persoon, die met een ongekende vriendelijke vasthoudendheid zijn uitgezette plan steeds wist uit te voeren.
De ziekte van zijn vrouw was voor hem een zware last, die hij echter steeds vol liefde voor haar gedragen heeft. Haar verzorging heeft hij, zolang als dat ging, op een bewonderenswaar­dige manier volgehouden. Haar heengaan was voor hem moeilijk en hij verlangde vanaf dat moment vooral weer naar hun hereniging na dit aardse bestaan. De laatste jaren heeft Jaap Vermeer doorgebracht in het verzorgingstehuis te Zeist waar ook zijn vrouw eerder was opgenomen. Daar is hij, fysiek uitgeput, maar geestelijk nog vitaal, ook overleden.
Het was een voorrecht hem gekend en met hem gewerkt te mogen hebben.
Wij zullen hem blijven herinneren als een bescheiden, uiterst vriendelijk en erudiet mens die met zijn werken en zijn bijdragen aan anderen, als geen ander, de kennis betreffende de Friese kromstevens heeft vast­gelegd en uitgedragen.
